Black Flying-fox

Binomial name: Pteropus alecto
Visual description: Glossy black fur with a long, narrow dog-like face. Wings are dark and expansive, giving a sleek silhouette in flight.
Measurements: Wingspan: Up to 1.2 m; Body mass: Up to 1 kg
Distribution: Northern and eastern Australia; also found in Papua New Guinea and parts of Indonesia, including Sulawesi and Nusa Tenggara
Roosting habits: Large camps, often with other flying-fox species
Diet: Nectar, pollen, fruit
Threats: Heat stress, urban conflict, habitat loss
Conservation status: EPBC Act: Not listed; IUCN: Least Concern
